Empowering Today’s Woman it Entrepreneur Through Faith and Obedience

Empowering Today’s Woman it Entrepreneur Through Faith and Obedience

My teaching at a women's conference hosted by: Devine Assembly International Church.

Introduction: Ladies, today we draw inspiration from the story of Elijah and the widow with little oil, found in 1 Kings 17:8-16. This powerful narrative teaches us about faith, obedience, and divine provision, which are essential qualities for any woman aspiring to succeed in business.

Faith and Trust: Just as the widow trusted Elijah’s promise that her resources would not run out, we must have faith in our vision and trust in God’s guidance. Believing in our business plans and having faith in our strategies can help us navigate through tough times. Trust in your vision and the process is essential. Building trust with stakeholders, employees, and customers is crucial for long-term success.

Resourcefulness and Innovation: The widow’s limited resources were multiplied through her obedience and faith. In business, we must be resourceful and innovative, finding creative solutions to maximize what we have and overcome challenges. Even with limited resources, strategic thinking and innovation can lead to significant outcomes.

Provision and Sustainability: God’s promise to the widow ensured her resources lasted throughout the drought. Similarly, sustainable practices and long-term planning are vital for business success. Ensuring that resources are managed wisely and planning for the future can help our businesses endure and thrive. This includes both short-term projects that provide immediate returns and long-term projects that ensure sustained growth and stability.

Collaboration and Support: Elijah’s intervention provided crucial support to the widow. In business, fostering collaborative relationships and building a network of support can lead to mutual success and enhance our resilience and growth. The church community can play a vital role in supporting each other, sharing resources, and working together towards common goals.

Adaptability and Resilience: Both Elijah and the widow had to adapt to their circumstances. As entrepreneurs, being flexible and resilient in the face of challenges is key to surviving and thriving in a dynamic market. Adaptability allows us to pivot and adjust strategies in response to changing conditions.

Focus on Agriculture: Given our context in Botswana, agriculture is a critical sector with immense potential. By focusing on potato production, we can leverage our resources effectively. With an investment of P57,000 to P70,000, we can expect returns of BWP 270,000 to 290,000. This venture not only promises financial returns but also contributes to food security and sustainable agricultural practices.

Short-Term Projects:

  • Pilot Potato Farming Project: Start with a small-scale potato farming project to test the viability and gather data.
  • Training and Workshops: Conduct training sessions and workshops to educate women on best practices in potato farming and business management.
  • Market Research: Perform market research to identify potential buyers and establish supply chains.

Long-Term Projects:

  • Expansion of Potato Farming: Scale up the potato farming project based on the success of the pilot phase.
  • Value Addition: Explore opportunities for value addition, such as processing potatoes into chips or other products.
  • Sustainable Practices: Implement sustainable farming practices to ensure long-term productivity and environmental conservation.
  • Community Support Programs: Develop programs to support other women entrepreneurs in agriculture, fostering a collaborative and supportive community.

Clustering and Working Together: The Bible provides us with powerful examples of the importance of working together. Consider the termites, which work in clusters to build their colonies. Each termite has a role, and together they create complex structures that would be impossible to achieve alone. Similarly, swans fly in a “V” formation, taking turns to lead and reduce wind resistance for the group. This teamwork allows them to travel great distances efficiently.

In business, clustering and collaboration are essential. By working together, sharing resources, and supporting each other, we can achieve far more than we could individually. The church community should learn to work together, support each other, and strive for collective success.

The Story of the Chinese Bamboo Farmer: The story of the Chinese bamboo farmer is a powerful illustration of patience and long-term planning. The farmer planted bamboo seeds and diligently watered and cared for them for five years without seeing any visible growth. Despite the lack of immediate results, he persisted. In the fifth year, the bamboo suddenly grew to over 80 feet in just six weeks12. This story teaches us that success often requires consistent effort and faith in the process, even when results are not immediate.

The Eagle’s Rebirth Process: Eagles undergo a remarkable rebirth process that symbolizes change and transformation. Around the age of 40, an eagle’s beak, talons, and feathers become weak, making it difficult to hunt and survive. The eagle then retreats to a mountaintop and goes through a painful process of breaking off its beak, plucking out its talons, and shedding its feathers. Over the next five months, the eagle grows new beak, talons, and feathers, emerging renewed and ready to live for another 30 years34. This process teaches us about the importance of embracing change, enduring short-term pain for long-term gain, and continually renewing ourselves to achieve greater heights.

Planning and Education: For long-term success in agriculture and business, planning is crucial. We must also emphasize the importance of education, particularly in hard sciences like agriculture, engineering, and technology. Encouraging our children to pursue these fields will equip them with the skills needed to become employers and innovators, rather than employees.

Conclusion: By embracing faith, obedience, resourcefulness, and collaboration, we can empower ourselves to succeed in business. Let us draw strength from the story of Elijah and the widow, trusting that with God’s guidance, we can achieve great things. The church community should learn to work together, support each other, and strive for collective success.
